Becoming a Frontier Firm: How We Help Clients Turn AI Ambition into Business Impact

May 20, 2026 - 5 min read

Having spent more than 20 years working closely with clients, understanding complex business challenges, and helping organizations maximize the value of Microsoft technologies, I recently had the opportunity to attend several. I recently had the opportunity to attend several events offered by Microsoft during the AI Skills Day. This specific session focused on what Microsoft calls the journey to becoming a Frontier Firm: organizations that are humanled and agentoperated, where AI is embedded into the way work gets done, decisions are made, and value is created.

What resonated deeply with us at Nextant is that this vision aligns closely with how we already partner with our clients. The message was clear: AI transformation is not about technology adoption. It is about rethinking how businesses operate, how work gets done, and how value is delivered at scale.

Here are the core lessons we took away, and how they directly shape the way Nextant helps organizations lead their AI transformation from a business perspective.

  1. AI transformation must start with business outcomes

The Frontier Firm framework reinforces a belief we hold strongly at Nextant:
AI is not an IT initiative. It is a business transformation.

Organizations that succeed with AI don’t start by asking only what tools should we deploy? They begin by clarifying what truly matters to the business, whether that’s accelerating revenue growth, improving customer experience, increasing quality, or reducing operational friction.

Our role with clients is to anchor AI efforts to those outcomes from day one. That clarity creates focus, avoids disconnected pilots, and ensures AI is measured by impact, not activity.

  1. Making work visible is the foundation for meaningful AI

Most value in modern organizations is created through knowledge work and that work is often invisible. Emails, meetings, decisions, handoffs, and judgment calls rarely show up clearly in process diagrams or dashboards.

One of the strongest insights from the Frontier Firm playbook is this:
You can’t redesign what you can’t see.

At Nextant, we spend time upfront helping clients surface how work actually happens:

  • Mapping day‑in‑the‑life journeys for key roles
  • Identifying bottlenecks, repetition, and decision overload
  • Making workflows and escalation paths explicit

This is where AI opportunities stop being abstract and start becoming real, actionable, and measurable.

  1. Trust and guardrails are prerequisites—not afterthoughts

Scaling AI without trust is one of the fastest ways to stall momentum.

The organizations that move confidently define clear risk boundaries early

  • What decisions remain human‑led
  • Where AI assists, automates, or recommends
  • How data, compliance, and accountability are enforced

At Nextant, we help clients design responsible AI guardrails before scaling so teams can move faster, not slower. Governance, when done right, enables experimentation rather than constraining it.

  1.  Adoption succeeds when it is role‑based and embedded in day-to-day work

Another consistent lesson: AI adoption does not happen tool by tool; it happens by role

What works best is accelerating the performance of critical personas:

  • Embedding AI into daily workflows, not optional side tools
  • Tailoring solutions to how people actually work
  • Establishing new habits by using structured routines, gentle reminders, and setting examples through leadership

This is how AI becomes part of the operating rhythm rather than a novelty. It shifts success from individual experimentation to repeatable, teamlevel impact: a transition we deliberately guide our clients through.

  1. The biggest gains come from reinventing workflows, not automating tasks

Task automation delivers quick wins, but the real change happens when organizations reinvent endtoend workflows

This requires rethinking:

  • How humans and AI agents collaborate
  • How roles are redesigned around higher‑value work
  • How teams are structured for sustainable performance

In some cases, the most advanced organizations even start from zero, imagining how work would be designed if AI were available from the beginning, then building up intentionally. This is where we see AI unlock entirely new ways of operating, not just incremental efficiency.

6. Becoming a Frontier Firm is an ongoing practice

Perhaps the most important takeaway is that there is no final destination.

Becoming a Frontier Firm is a continuous practice. One that requires curiosity, experimentation, and a willingness to learn as AI evolves. The organizations that win are not the ones with the biggest pilots, but the ones that consistently turn learning into operational change.

At Nextant, we see our role as long‑term partners on that journey: helping clients test, learn, scale what works, and keep connecting AI efforts to business value.

Our perspective:

The future of AI is not about replacing people; it is about enabling them to do their best work, supported by intelligent agents, guided by clear intent, and measured by outcomes that matter.

That is how organizations move from experimenting with AI to truly becoming Frontier Firms.

At Nextant, we can be your partner in navigating this transformative journey. We are here to help by driving the essential change management needed for successful transformation, empowering your teams with the knowledge and skills to adapt, cultivating a collaborative, continuously learning culture, and ensuring the process is truly people-focused. By prioritizing workforce engagement and building capabilities,

Nextant ensures your organization moves beyond IT alone, enabling everyone to participate in and benefit from AI progress. Our support is grounded in fostering experimentation, curiosity, and the sharing of insights, so your organization can continually learn, evolve, and realize the full potential of AI.
